WHY SSA: Social Security touches the lives of millions, providing vital services and a social safety net through disability, retirement, and survivor benefits. Our Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is a modern public service law office with a highly-skilled, engaged, and diverse workforce. We strategically manage a large national workload through effective collaboration & coordination. We offer the opportunity to handle meaningful and challenging legal work, while earning a competitive salary (plus locality pay), a flexible work schedule, and telework. Employees may be eligible to work remotely from home.
WHY OGC'S BANKRUPTCY BRANCH: OGC’s Office of Program Litigation, Bankruptcy Branch serves an integral role in SSA's program integrity and anti-fraud efforts. Bankruptcy attorneys contribute to SSA's mission to serve the American public by helping to protect SSA's funds. When individuals who fraudulently obtain benefits seek to have their overpayments discharged in the bankruptcy courts, SSA's bankruptcy attorneys pursue adversary actions against such individuals to ensure their overpayment debts are preserved and can be recovered. More information about SSA's fraud prevention efforts can be found at https://www.ssa.gov/fraud/. Bankruptcy attorneys have significant responsibility for their own cases, which may include drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, and participating in hearings and trials.
