Job Description: The Washington Appellate Project is hiring a staff attorney. The Washington Appellate Project is a nonprofit public defense firm of 16 attorneys providing the highest quality representation to indigent clients appealing criminal convictions, civil commitments and termination of parental rights throughout the State of Washington. Our office’s lawyers appear before the Washington Court of Appeals, the Washington Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. We place a high value on collaboration and creative client-centered advocacy. Our attorneys have won numerous cases reshaping Washington’s criminal justice and family defense systems to address racial and economic disparity. These include cases invalidating Washington’s Death Penalty, striking down Washington’s drug possession statute, bringing about juvenile justice reforms, and limiting financial penalties.
Qualifications include superior written and oral advocacy skills, a strong commitment to working with low-income individuals and marginalized communities, and a commitment to criminal and racial justice. The expected start date will be September 1, 2024, although the start day could be sooner if mutually agreeable. Candidates must be eligible at the time of employment for admission to the Washington Bar pursuant to Washington Admission to Practice Rule 3. Preference will be given to applicants with relevant experience.
Attorney salaries range from $89,000 to $125,000. Initial salary will depend on experience. Benefits include health insurance, employer sponsored IRA plan with employer contribution, and a generous paid time off policy. Attorneys generally work in the office with a degree flexibility to work remotely when appropriate.
