The Seattle City Attorney's Office seeks an attorney to join its Civil Enforcement Section in the Civil Division. Civil Enforcement provides legal advice and handles civil litigation for City departments on code enforcement matters.

This position will work primarily with the Seattle Police Department (SPD) and represent the department in narcotics and felony civil forfeiture cases (RCW 69.50.505) before the police Hearing Examiner, King County District Court, and King County Superior Court. The attorney would also appear on behalf of SPD and other city departments in response to subpoenas duces tecum for a department’s records. There would likely be opportunities for this attorney to become involved in other civil code enforcement matters handled by the team.

Experience with criminal law (either as a prosecutor or defense attorney), and litigation experience is desired. The attorney hired for this position will have the opportunity to thoroughly research legal issues and collaborate with dedicated colleagues and clients on a regular basis. The successful candidate should also expect to take a lead role on cases shortly after joining the office. Job Responsibilities:

Litigate civil code enforcement cases and Seattle Police Department forfeiture cases in administrative and judicial tribunals including advising, motions practice, discovery, hearings/trials, and all subsequent appeals

Advise City officials and other City employees on legal issues

Research and draft legal documents and memoranda

Work independently while managing a large caseload

Draft and negotiate settlements

Complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, the selected candidate will need the knowledge and skills gained by working as an attorney, including:

Washington State Bar membership

At least 2 years of civil or criminal litigation experience

Excellent research, writing, communication, computer, and interpersonal skills

Ability to manage time, set priorities, and work on multiple projects in a lead role while with great attention to detail

Effective oral and written advocacy skills

Demonstrated ability to learn and apply a new area of law
